INTERESTING READS: LITTLE WOMEN

Bonjour, dear readers. Hope you all are doing good. Today’s blog is about a book I recently read ‘Little Women.

Little Women is an 1868 novel  and also has a sequel Good Wives published in 1869.  Written by Louisa May Alcott, it is a perfect book to read lazily, snuggled on couch and sipping hot chocolate. It is tale of 4 sisters and how they  graduate from being children to young ladies, facing trials  and tribulations, time and again in life.  It is an immensely absorbing read about sisterly love, romance,  family , sacrifice, parting ways and death.

Meg, Amy, Jo and Beth are the four March sisters who live with their mother and old cook Hannah.Their father has gone away to help in the war. Louisa has beautifully described the innocent friendship which gradually developed between the Marches’ and their neighbour  Laurie .I admit I cried while reading some chapters showcasing the close relationship between Jo and Beth.I was touched by the way Louisa described Jo’s ambitions, her  grieving and love for  family. I loved the innocent romance of Meg and John(Laurie’s tutor). But I really thought that in the first book, Amy was  portrayed in a bad light . I personally thought that she was innocent and kind hearted although a bit haughty. Overall, I would say that the book was touching, impressively written and narrated and showed the hard parts of life perfectly well.

Now we come to the second book in which the March sisters are young ladies in their 20s. Laurie is in college and John and Meg are getting married. This book focuses more on Jo and Amy’s bittersweet relationship and Laurie’s romance with both of them (it’s complicated!). Beth dies due to weakness. Ok,I am not ashamed to admit that I cried buckets of tears in those chapters when Beth was on verge of death. Have to say , Louisa had a way with words.I loved how Jo found true guidance in Bhaer and innocent , strong love between Amy and Laurie. It had a happy ending but I was still sad over Beth’s death. Overall, I liked this book more than the previous one as I think it portrayed the emotions even  better. They were not heart touching, they were soul touching.

Both the books were classic reads, had impressive literature and lovely endings , though I thought they were a bit stretched .Absolutely absorbing reads and a must for classic book lovers looking for female dominated themes.

Meet you in the next blog. Au Revoir !
