Negative marking๐Ÿ˜ฐ

Hi guys! Sorry I haven’t written for such a long time but I had exams so it didn’t leave much time to write. Anyways, here goes nothing...

I know the biggest fear of secondary and higher secondary school students. Trust me, I do! It’s negative marking. The most frightening thing in the world for a student! Recently, I took my first negative marking test. And oh boy! I was a walking talking bucket of sweat. And I hadn’t even prepared that well so I was in confusion for almost half the paper.

First of all, I don’t even understand the concept of negative marking. Like, why is it even needed? The teachers are just showing their desperation for reducing marks! Or maybe they are trying to scare the students away so that there are less papers to check! Whichever the case, I know one thing for sure, ‘Some teachers are nightmares dressed like daydreams’. Okay, maybe that was a stretch but you get what I mean.๐Ÿ™„

During the whole test my mind was in a dilemma, one telling me to go ahead and mark the answer I think is correct and the devil part telling me to remember the consequences if the answer turns out be incorrect. And due to unconscious hair scratching, by the time the test finished, my hair looked like a birds’ nest!๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿฆฑ

I think that exams are getting too competitive for their own good. Exams need participation and participants. This kind of marking systems scare students from participating. I still think grading is the best. But whenever I express this, the reaction always is ‘Pre-primary baby grow up!’ It’s so annoying! The most infuriating part is that it makes us lose marks that we earned by answering correctly. Half baked knowledge and reckless answering attempt costs -2 marks. I was just so relieved that they stop counting marks once it reaches 0 otherwise mine would have gone on till -30.

One thing I learnt was that my luck is really rotten. In movies they take the name of God and mark the answer with their eyes closed. In the end, they pass with flying colours. Let me tell you, that happens only in movies! I tried that and...let’s just say it didn’t end well. Scratch that, it ended with a flying chhapal on my cheek. And above that, I didn’t even know it was a negative marking test! Oh the nightmarish day!๐Ÿ˜ฃ

My advice to all who will give these types of tests is that treat negative marking as your Achilles heel during preparation. And no matter how tempting it is, don’t mark the answer if you aren’t at least 90% sure of your answer. Share below your experiences with negative marking tests and how you fared. Logging out, ciao!

  1. Dear Aarushi,
Nice to read your views and feelings, a just 13 plus kid, who wrote her first test based on negative marking.
You are lucky enough and all your contemporary too. You have at least some chance to pass, with flying colours, simply by ticking on an option, based on blind guess.
In our times there was no option like ticking. We had to write relevant answer or be prepared to fail.
I congratulate you for writing your experience very vividly and in a lucid manner. I am always excited to read your blog.
    God bless you.

  2. It requires lot of courage to write something on Negative elements.

First of all it shows there is lack of faith in ourselves to fight against the circumstances in life may be studies, relationships, career, or else any activity where there is comparison of achievement at the end of event.

I am not of opinion about having faith in God only can help us. But most important challenge lies WITHIN us, and that matter most how we analyse ourselves in that given situation.

One old story, you might be aware of "Allaudin ka chirag",
Where what ever is your wish it is his duty to fulfill, without logical or illogical thinking.

It is nothing but our SUBCONSCIOUS Mind which works maximum then conscious mind. Whatever wish you submit to your subconscious mind with 1000% faith it is going to happen.

Yes relative to Negative marking, we had not faced any such situations in studies, but surely we had faced many a times in career. According to my experience for negative marking, it makes us to learn many things like

1). In life if you are 100% aware about the facts then believe else let it go.

2). Be prepared thoroughly for the given situations,
no IFs and BUTs. Then let whatever may be result leave it, since it is a call of your subconscious mind.

3). Your fundamentals and basic should be very much clear to analyse the given problem and workout on a problem with all alternative method, you will be clear for answering.

4). Don't bother about what is left, and not to try to workout on all problems, but yes you should go through all problems, and try to solve which you feel comfortable and reach nearest to the solution.

5). DON'T get panic, since you know mathematics even

    - * - = + result is positive,

    + * + =+ result is positive.

    THINK POSITIVE ACT PPSITIVE.

Best wihses, may GOD bless you.

  3. As school going kids we have all plotted strategies to maximize gains in objective type exams only to realize that negative marking can throw spanner in best laid plans. The blog is representative of such experience. In case of negative marking it is best to skip the answer to question you are not sure of.

  4. Well written blog outlining the sentiments of a student who prepares as per rules and finds that rules of the game have changed while appearing in the examination. Negative marking is not necessarily a bad thing as it prevents students from bluffing their way through, in multiple choice type of questions.

  5. Well expressed concerns of a learner of any age!
My sense is that evaluation should be done with a positive approach of how much the student knows rather than what she doesn't know. Keep writing!
